The Prince of Wales has donated to the Hellenic Red Cross (HRC) to help the victims of the wildfire that has ravaged Greece.
The Prince is the patron of the British Red Cross and donation directly to help with the humanitarian efforts in Greece – his father’s birthplace.
About the donation, Antonios Avgerinos, the President of the Hellenic Red Cross, said: “We are immensely grateful for His Royal Highness’ kind donation. It means a great deal to the dedicated staff of the HRC and to the people of Greece who we are helping.
“We are working hard to assist effected people during these extremely difficult times, with the wildfires now affecting over 70,000 people.
“We hold a great affection towards His Royal Highness given his close family links with the country, and the HRC will continue to work tirelessly for the people of Greece who have suffered with these unprecedented wildfires.”
The trained HRC teams have assisted in finding the needs of the people during the disaster and helped to fight the fires. They also provided first aid, psychological support and took part in search and rescue activities.
The fires in Greece have burnt over 100,000 hectares over the last two weeks; it is the most destructive fire in the country since 2007. The blazes have, for now, been brought under control. During the worst of the inferno, Tatoi Palace in Athens was threatened, and the fire made it to the Royal Cemetery – the burial place of Prince Charles’ paternal grandfather, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and many other family members.
Two containers full of unidentified royal artefacts from the deposed Greek Royal Family were destroyed in the blaze.
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Greece earlier this year.
