Queen Anne-Marie celebrates her 80th birthday on Sunday and fulfilled a lifelong dream to mark the special anniversary.
In a new photo released by the Danish Royal Family, Queen Anne-Marie is pictured in Greenland. It marks the first time the former queen of Greece had been to the country.
The Danish Royal Court said that Queen Anne-Marie and her daughter, Princess Theodora, travelled to Nuuk and Ilulissat earlier this month; and that the trip had been a gift from Queen Anne-Marie’s sisters, Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte.
Remarkably, Queen Anne-Marie never visited Greenland despite it being part of the Danish kingdom over which her father, sister, and now nephew reign.
Queen Anne-Marie is the youngest child of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, born on 30 August 1946. Her father ascended to the Danish throne less than a year after her birth, and in 1964, she renounced her Danish titles and rights of succession in order to marry King Constantine II of Greece.
King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie settled in Greece for the early years of their reign, but the royal couple was forced to abdicate following a military coup in 1973. Afterwards, the Greek royal couple lived abroad in London before finally being allowed to return to Greece in the new millennium.
King Constantine died in Athens following complications from a stroke in January 2023.
Princess Theodora is the youngest daughter of the Greek royal couple, born 9 June 1983. She is an actress with a long-time role on The Bold and the Beautiful and credits in various films and television movies.
She married the American attorney Matthew Kumar in September 2024 in Athens, and acquired Greek citizenship in December of that year, assuming the name Theodora de Grèce, along with four siblings. Queen Anne-Marie did not apply for Greek citizenship alongside her children.
