First rugby match for William and Kate as patrons of rival sides

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Burns Night 2021

It’s Wales vs England as the Six Nations continues and this match, always highly anticipated, will also be the debut of William and Kate as patrons of rival rugby associations as they attend the game at Twickenham Stadium.

This will be the first time the royal couple have attended a rugby match together since Kate took over patronage of the Rugby Football League and the Rugby Football Union earlier this month.

Upon arrival at the stadium, on February 26th 2022, William and Kate will meet with the President of the Rugby Football Union and the President of the Welsh Rugby Union, and then speak with representatives of the Rugby Football Union’s community game, which includes volunteers and council members.

Kate took over as patron of the Rugby Football League and the Rugby Football Union following Prince Harry’s departure as a full-time working royal; William has been patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016, taking over from The Queen. Prior to that appointment, he had been vice patron from 2007. The Princess Royal is patron of the Scottish Rugby Union.

Earlier this month, Kate took part in a training session at Twickenham following the announcement of her patronage, meeting with both the women’s and men’s national rugby teams.

She shared a personal message to the Kensington Palace social media accounts, writing: “I am so thrilled to become Patron of the @TheRFL and @EnglandRugby. Two fantastic organisations who are committed to harnessing the power that sport can have in bringing communities together and helping individuals flourish. I look forward to working with them across all levels of the games, and to cheering England on in what promises to be an exciting year for both sports! C”

The Six Nations is an annual competition between the national men’s rugby teams from England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. The reigning champion is the Welsh team.
