Windsor Castle halls are decked for Christmas

The holiday season is slowly starting for the Royal Family. The Christmas decorations are now up at Windsor Castle for visitors to enjoy over the next six weeks.

The staff at Windsor have been busy over the last week getting the castle ready for Christmas. The castle is open for visitors who will be able to see several historic rooms including the Crimson Drawing Room, St. George’s Hall, and the Waterloo Chamber.

Of course, it would not be Christmas without a tree, or several. There is a six-metre-tall Nordmann Fir tree in St. George’s Hall that was grown on the Windsor estate and has been dressed in over 3,000 lights, hundreds of ornaments, and velvet and satin ribbons. On 8, 9, 12, and 15 December there will be local choirs performing in St. George’s Hall for visitors to enjoy.

The Crimson Drawing Room also plays host to an ornate Christmas tree. The room is part of the Semi-State Rooms, an oppulent set of private apartments that George IV had built in the 1820s. In addition to the Christmas tree, portraits of King George IV, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother are hung in the Crimson Drawing Room.

Christmas decor is spread around the castle, including a decorated Grand Staircase, and the Waterloo Chamber where several notable pieces from the Royal Collection Trust are on display for the season.

There will be special activities for children on the weekends including Christmas crafts at the Castle Learning Centre, and the Undercroft Cafe is offering a special holiday-themed menu.

The Christmas decorations will be up at Windsor Castle until 2 January 2022. The castle is open every week from Thursday to Monday and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The holiday displays are included in standard admission tickets; visitors should book their tickets ahead.
