Prince Charles falls over on his way to the podium to deliver his COP26 conference speech

The Prince of Wales fell over as he climbed some steps to deliver his speech at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

As he was making his way towards the podium, the 72-year-old royal tripped over, but carried on to deliver his speech.

Harry Cole of The Sun tweeted: “Worrying moment [as] Prince Charles takes a stumble on the stairs up to the COP platform. He appears to be fine and into his speech.”

In his speech, the Prince of Wales spoke passionately about the “existential threat” facing the planet, calling on world leaders to join together.

The heir to the throne said: “Having myself had the opportunity of consulting many of you over these past eighteen months, I know you all carry a heavy burden on your shoulders and you do not need me to tell you that the eyes – and hopes – of the world are upon you to act with all despatch, and decisively – because time has run out.”

Addressing world leaders directly, Charles said: “Many of your countries I know are already feeling the devastating impact of climate change, through ever-increasing droughts, mudslides, floods, hurricanes, cyclones and wildfires, as we’ve just seen on that terrifying film.

“Any leader who has had to confront such life-threatening challenges knows that the cost of inaction is far greater than the cost of prevention.

“So, I can only urge you, as the world’s decision-makers, to find practical ways of overcoming differences so we can all get down to work, together, to rescue this precious planet and save the threatened future of our young people.”
