Millions get ready for the Platinum Jubilee big lunch as traditional rainy weather moves in

Nearly every major event of The Queen’s long reign has seen a burst of rainy weather so millions of party goers around the UK were ready for showers as they prepared for the Platinum Jubilee big lunch.

The community gatherings, a high point of the Platinum celebrations, are set to take place in their greatest numbers on June 5, the final day of the Jubilee weekend.

Organised by the Big Lunch at Eden Community Projects, the get togethers are planned for every corner of the UK as well as across the Commonwealth.

Some are huge events, taking over town squares or networks of streets. Others are small gatherings, in church grounds or private gardens.

Whatever the size of the party, organisers have been helped with a support pack provided by Eden as well as tips online on how to create the perfect celebration.

It’s also hoped that many of the get togethers will see people enjoy the Platinum Pudding, a trifle flavoured with lemon and amaretti biscuits and based on the pudding at The Queen and Prince Philip’s wedding.

The Duchess of Cornwall is patron of the Big Lunch and will attend one of the biggest parties at the Oval. The Earl and Countess of Wessex will be at a celebration on the Long Walk at Windsor which is aiming to become a record breaker.

And while the forecast has plenty of showers in it, rain is yet to stop play when it comes to a Jubilee street party.
