Former First Lady Michelle Obama has weighed in on the drama in the Royal Family after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave an interview to Oprah Winfrey on 7 March.
Mrs Obama told Access Hollywood: “My hope is that, when I think about what they’re going through, I think about the importance of family, and I just pray that there is forgiveness and there is clarity and love and resolve at some point in time.
“Because there’s nothing more important than family.”
During Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah, they revealed that a member of the Royal Family was concerned about Archie’s skin tone and how the Duchess felt silenced as a member of the Firm.
Buckingham Palace later released a statement on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, saying: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”
The former First Lady has met with members of the Royal Family on several occasions, including one incident that caused a bit of unintended controversy with The Queen when Mrs Obama placed her arm around Her Majesty. The controversy was only in the media as The Queen’s dressmaker, Angela Kelly, later revealed that The Queen had no problem with Mrs Obama giving her a hug.
Mrs Obama is also a friend of Prince Harry and has supported his Invictus Games. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first engagement after their wedding was meeting President and Mrs Obama at Buckingham Palace in 2011, as well.
