Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia of Sweden has given birth to a healthy baby boy at Danderyd Hospital at 11:24 am. Both mother and child are doing well according to the Royal Court. The new prince weighs 3400 g and is 49cm long.
The press release said, “The Office of The Marshal of the Realm is delighted to announce that HRH Princess Sofia gave birth to a healthy child Thursday the 31 August 2017 at 11.24am at Danderyd Hospital.
“Both mother and child are in good health.”
This is the second child of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. They already have a one-year-old son, Prince Alexander. It is the sixth grandchild for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and is sixth in line to the Swedish throne.
Princ Carl Philip met the media at 3 pm Swedish time to announce that Prince Alexander has a baby brother. In English, Carl Philip said, “We are very happy….We have pure joy. He’s super sweet and seems like a really charming little boy.”
It was announced on 23 March of this year that Her Royal Highness was expecting their second child. They said then that the baby was due in September. The Prince and Princess stated in a statement on that day, “We are happy to announce that we are expecting a child, a sibling to Prince Alexander. We are looking forward to welcoming a new little member to our family.”
Princess Sofia went on maternity leave just a couple weeks ago.
A Te Deum service will be held Monday at 12:15 in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace. The name and duchy of the child will be revealed in a cabinet meeting by the King on Monday at 11:15 am. The christening will likely be in around three months. Princess Madeleine, younger sister of Carl Philip and Sara Hellqvist, the younger sister of Sofia are expected to be two of the godparents.
