Will Princess Ingrid Alexandra follow in her father’s footsteps now that she’s reached adulthood?

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway will one day be Queen of Norway, and the public has set its eyes on her future since the day she was born.

Now that she has reached adulthood, at least in age, some questions are closer to being answered.

Just like her Dutch counterpart Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess Ingrid Alexandra will undertake official duties that are designed to prepare her for her future role. On the eve of her 18th birthday, she visited the Parliament, the Supreme Court and the office of the Prime Minister. On the day itself, she received “congratulatory deputations” accompanied by her parents.

And what happens after is still an open question. The Princess has already undertaken some military engagements, and it seems likely that she will undertake some form of military training in the near future. Her Belgian counterpart, Princess Elisabeth, went through one year of military training after completing high school and before signing up for university.

Military training is crucial for any future head of state, as they will also inherit the charge of Chief of the Armed Forces, and Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s father, Crown Prince Haakon, went through three years of Naval Military Academy, graduating in 1999. He continues to train occasionally, with his last success being the achievement of the paratrooper certification in 2016, following a course managed by the Special Operations Commando of the Norwegian Army.

And if Crown Prince Haakon’s education journey is anything to go by, Princess Ingrid Alexandra will also attend university, potentially abroad and maybe for subjects that will be a part of her future role as Queen. The heir to the throne graduated University of California-Berkley in 1999 with a BA in political science and the London School of Economics in 2003 with a MSc in development studies, specialising in international trade and Africa. In between the two aforementioned universities, he attended lectures at the University of Oslo, and also undertook the civil service course.

So it is reasonable to expect that Princess Ingrid Alexandra will also undertake a university journey in political science, economics or international relations, all fields that pertain to the job of a head of state.

In the more immediate future, we can expect a remake of the gala dinner that was supposed to be held in connection with her 18th birthday, which was cancelled due to health safety concerns. Can we expect to see the Princess in a tiara for the occasion? Only time will tell…
