90 Years of Grace: Her ’80s Style

Today we’re looking back at some of Princess Grace’s most stylish moments of the 1980s. Before her untimely death in 1982, Grace maintained an active schedule of royal duties. She also struck up a friendship with Diana, Princess of Wales, prior to her wedding, and the two met frequently. Other major events she attended included Hollywood tributes and family weddings.

Princess Grace followed the fashion trends of the decade: big and frilly and princessy outfits, costume jewellery and a milkmaid braid she wore at the crown of her head. Read on to see a few of Princess Grace’s most iconic style moments of the ’80s.

Here, she’s wearing an iridescent gown at the American Film Institute Tribute to Jimmy Stewart on 28 February 1980. They had co-starred in Rear Window together in 1954.

On 9 March 1981, Princess Grace met Lady Diana Spencer whose engagement to the Prince of Wales had just been announced, at a gala fundraising event in aid of the Royal Opera House. Diana was said to have admired her greatly when Grace consoled her at the event and warned her of the future that awaited her as a royal bride.

In April 1981, Princess Grace traveled to Tokyo for an official visit with Prince Rainer and Princess Stéphanie.

And she celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary that month as well.

Princess Grace traveled back to Philadelphia in June 1981 to attend the wedding of her brother, Jack Kelly, along with Prince Rainier.

Princess Grace was spotted at the men’s singles final at Wimbledon on 4 July, seated in front of Lady Diana Spencer.

Later that month, on 29 July, she and Prince Albert traveled to London to attend the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

In August, she attend the Bal de la Rose alongside Princess Caroline in this yellow concoction.

And at her final National Day on 19 November, Princess Grace looked resplendent in brown and white fur.

Early in 1982, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier traveled to the North Pole.

She was photographed with her brother again in 1982, wearing a bubblegum pink suit and milkmaid braid.

And attended the opening of the Museum of Hairstyle in Paris alongside renowned hairstylist Alexandre de Paris on 16 June.

Princess Grace passed away from complications following a car accident on 12 September 1982. She was 52 years old.
