Princess Marie helps start new chapter for Prince Henrik’s School

Princess Marie of Denmark has helped to start a new chapter for Prince Henrik’s School in Frederiksberg.

The Princess was on hand for the groundbreaking of the private international school’s new buildings on Monday, 27 September.

Her Royal Highness was greeted by France’s Ambassador to Denmark Caroline Ferrari and Chairman of the Prince Henrik’s Real Estate Fund Anders Torbøl before the groundbreaking began. They were also joined by the Mayor of Frederiksberg, Simon Aggesen.

Princess Marie addressed those assembled and paid tribute to her late father in law, sharing the pride she knew he would have in the school and the upcoming project.

“It’s for me an immense joy, a great emotion but also a deep celebration to be with you today and to take part in the groundbreaking of this new school, at the time where each says school is important and essential,” she said.

The Princess added that “this project, symbol of the relationship between Denmark and France, is destined for one of the most beautiful causes that are: the education of our children.”

She concluded by saying she was proud to carry on her father-in-law’s tradition and led three cheers for the school.

Originally, the French international school was founded in 1954 as a small embassy school. It has now grown to accommodate 800 students from ages three to 18 from around 40 different countries. Its name was changed to honour French-born Prince Henrik – the late consort of Queen Margrethe – in 1989. The school prepares students for both French and Danish high school graduation exams.

Princess Marie was the perfect choice to attend the groundbreaking as, like her late father-in-law, she was born and raised in France.
