Crown Princess Mary presents education awards

Crown Princess Mary helped award the Ministry of Education and Research’s National Education Prizes to seven teachers across Denmark.

Presented to the best educators each year who “involve, inspire and pique the curiosity of the students,” according to the Ministry of Education website, the National Education Prizes come with a combined reward of Kr 3.5 million, with each educator receiving Kr 500,000

The prize money is broken down to 200,000 Danish kroner for a personal reward and 300,000 kroner to go towards classroom activities that can benefit the students and facilities of the teachers’ schools.

Crown Princess Mary joined the Minister of Education, Jesper Petersen, for the ceremony to present to the teachers. Of the seven winners, two represented universities, one represented a business academy, one for an artistic education institute, one for a maritime educational institute, and two from vocational colleges.

“We must honour the excellent teaching in higher education, just as we honour the excellent research. It is impressive how the teachers manage to renew the teaching in different ways,” said Minister of Education Jesper Petersen in a statement on the ministry’s website.

“We need dedicated educators who can excite and pique curiosity. These are the ones we pay tribute to today.”

The seven winners of this year’s prizes are: Jakob Egholm Feldt from Roskilde University, Nicole Schmitt from the University of Copenhagen, Claus Bjerre and Bo From Jacobsen from UCL Business Academy and Professional College, Henriette Lorentzen from Copenhagen Professional College, Lars Brian Bach from Business Academy Kolding, Maria Sparre-Petersen and Flemming Tvede Hansen Royal Academy and Jan Sturm Almind from Fredericia Maskinmesterskole.

According to the Ministry of Education website, “The teaching award must create increased awareness of the role of the teacher and inspire excellent teaching in higher education.”

Crown Princess Mary’s attendance at the Ministry of Education and Research’s National Education Prize comes on the heels of a busy weekend.

On Saturday evening, Crown Princess Mary helped award the Crown Prince Couple’s foundation prizes alongside her husband. On Sunday, the royal joined her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, in hosting a dinner for the Royal Danish Army.
