Crown Princess Mary is surrounded by her family as she opens exhibit for her 50th birthday

Two days before the day, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark took one more step towards celebrating her big milestone 50th birthday.

Her Royal Highness opened the exhibition “HRH Crown Princess Mary 1972-2022,” missing only her eldest son, Prince Christian, who is away at Herlufsholm boarding school, which is about 80 kilometres south of Copenhagen.

The exhibition will display a wide variety of elements that make up the Crown Princess’s life: from dresses and personal objects to paintings and photographs, the show aims to paint as complete a picture as possible of the Princess that came from Down Under.

Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine arrived at the National History Museum at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, where the exhibition will stay.

Before they got a preview of the objects on display, they were all present of the unveiling of the Crown Princess’s new portrait, a painting by Spanish born artist Jesús Herrera Martínez.

The painting was unveiled in the Angels Hall but will be featured in the exhibition in the Knights Hall, so, after the unveiling, for which Crown Princess Mary pulled down a silky blue drape, the painting was moved.

In one of the pictures posted by the Danish Royal Household in connection with the event, the public can get the smallest preview of some of the dresses the Crown Princess has donated for the exhibition: three gowns, all iconic, and a couple of dresses.

Specifically, one of the gowns is the burgundy velvet piece she has worn several times for the traditional New Years’ Reception, representing her duties as the future consort of a head of state; another one is the blue gown she debuted for the BAMBI Awards, representing her charity work; and finally, the gown she wore for Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th birthday gala dinner, a symbol of the love for family that she has always put first.

Another symbolic dress in the picture is a green piece she wore during a tour of Australia in March of 2005, a sweet and subtle nod to her roots.

The exhibition opens on the 4th of February and will run until the 31st of August 2022.
