A new portrait of Crown Princess Mary is revealed as her 50th birthday approaches

Crown Princess Mary is about to turn 50 years old, and Denmark is preparing to celebrate its future Queen with all the grandeur she deserves.

So far, the Crown Princess has given two interviews, announced the opening of a new children’s hospital under the umbrella of Rigshospitalet, saw the publication of a photo book about her 18 years in the Danish Royal Family and opened two exhibitions.

And it was specifically during the opening of the “HRH Crown Princess Mary 1972-2022” exhibition that a newly painted portrait of the royal was unveiled.

The painting was created by Spanish-born artist Jesús Herrera Martínez and features the Crown Princess in her Amalienborg Palace office, as well as real and fictional elements that bring together her work in Denmark and her Australian roots.

In a shadow projected against the blue background, a eucalyptus plant is visible, the artist’s tribute to the native land of Denmark’s Crown Princess.

Mary is portrayed wearing what looks like a modified version of an off-the-shoulder Prada dress that she debuted possibly in 2006 and has re-worn on at least three other occasions since.

Jesús Herrera Martínez is a Danish-resident artist and already caught the public attention in 2017 when he was the recipient of the first “Portrait NOW!” prize; the prizes are handed out by the National History Museum.

The exhibit is being held at the National History Museum, located at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, and will be open to the public until the 31st of August.

The preparatory work that Jesús Herrera Martínez did for his portrait will instead be showcased in an independent exhibition that will open during the winter holidays still at the National History Museum so that the public can enjoy both shows and the continuity of the work the artist did to achieve his final result.
