The Princess of Wales watches England rugby race to World Cup win

Catherine, The Princess of Wales speaks about her early years project, Shaping Us, on visit to Leeds

The Princess of Wales cheered her team to victory as England advanced to the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The royal arrived solo at the Stade de Marseille for an afternoon of rugby and sat between Sir Bill Beaumont, the chairperson of World Rugby, and Rob Bryers, the president of the Rugby Football Union.

As the match played behind them, two fans went viral on social media for their signs to Catherine. One man’s sign read: “Kate. Divorce et epousé moi” (English: Kate. Divorce him and marry me); the other read “Non, pas lui, Kate, mais moi” (English: No, not him, Kate, but me).

Catherine watched England defeat Fiji 30-24 in a tight match, then joined the team back in their dressing room. England Rugby posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Great to have our patron Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales in attendance in Marseille.”

This is the second match Catherine has attended so far; last month, she watched England’s match against Argentina in the pool stage.

After the match, Catherine shared on social media: “Into the semi-finals! Congratulations @EnglandRugby.”

It was a royal rugby weekend for the British royals. Prince William and Prince George attended the Wales vs. Argentina match on Saturday afternoon; unfortunately for them, Argentina defeated Wales 29-17.

England will play again in the semi-finals next weekend, competing against South Africa, the defending champs.

If England wins its match, they will advance to the final on 28 October; should they lose, they will compete in the Bronze final on 27 October.

Catherine has been patron of the Rugby Football Union and the Rugby Football League since 2022.
