The Princess of Wales shows support for England Rugby at World Cup

Catherine, The Princess of Wales speaks about her early years project, Shaping Us, on visit to Leeds

The Princess of Wales watched the England rugby team win in Marseilles, France, on Saturday evening, hours after a podcast appearance with the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal and her dropped.

Catherine arrived in Marseilles on Saturday evening, watching England defeat Argentina in the first of its group matches, 27-10.

Earlier in the day, on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast—hosted by Mike Tindall, James Haskell and Alex Payne—Catherine said that she hoped the first-round match went well for England, helping them build confidence over the next month of play.

Catherine spoke about her love of sport, saying, “I can always remember being physical, using our bodies, whether it’s walking, climbing the lake district in Scotland, swimming from a young age.

“[My parents] always encouraged us to be physically active and sporty and they always encouraged us into doing team sports and trying things.”

She revealed that she loves cold water swimming—the colder, the better—and that she and William have never actually finished a tennis match due to their competitiveness.

Princess Anne, meanwhile, was acknowledged as the person in the room with the most knowledge about rugby, and she revealed that it was entirely accidental: the person who’d been due to make the initial visit 37 years ago cancelled, and she stepped in last minute, and the rest is history.

Mike Tindall’s royal in-laws are the patrons of the Welsh Rugby Union (William), the Rugby Football Union (Catherine) and the Scottish Rugby Union (Princess Anne).

On Sunday, William will watch Wales play Fiji. The Rugby World Cup continues until 28 October, with matches held at various venues in France.
