The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released new family photos taken with Sir David Attenborough to coincide with the upcoming release of Sir David’s film, David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet.
The photographs were taken on Thursday afternoon, following a private outdoor screening of Sir David’s film. William and Sir David can be seen sitting in canvas directors’ chairs with their names on the back in one of the photos — though, as a joke, they’re sitting in each others’ chairs.
Kensington Palace wrote about William and Sir David’s working relationship, “With a shared passion for protecting the natural world, they continue to support one another in their missions to tackle some of the biggest environmental challenges our planet faces. This includes working together on the Earthshot Prize, the most prestigious global environment prize in history.”
Kensington Palace further noted that more information about the Earthshot Prize, a prize created by Prince William that launched earlier this year with a video narrated by Sir David, will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
The Earthshot Prize will award five winners per year over the next decade with prize money for coming up with innovative ideas to help save the planet. The prize’s official website notes: “Our prizes will reward progress across all sectors of industry and society, not just technology. The prizes could be awarded to a wide range of individuals, teams or collaborations…anyone who is making a substantial development or outstanding contribution to solving our environmental challenges.”
Sir David’s visit was a surprise for the Cambridge children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, following their day at school. Sir David also gave Prince George a gift in the form of a 23-million-year-old giant shark tooth (a carcharocles megalodon, in scientific terms) that he’d discovered on a trip to Malta in the late ‘60s.
Sir David’s newest film, A Life On Our Planet, explores his “powerful first-hand account of humanity’s impact on nature and a message of hope for future generations,” according to its official website.
The synopsis also states: “In his 94 years, David Attenborough has visited every continent on the globe, exploring the wild places of our planet and documenting the living world in all its variety and wonder. Now, for the first time, he reflects upon both the defining moments of his lifetime as a naturalist and the devastating changes he has seen.”
A Life On Our Planet premieres Monday in cinemas and will premiere the following week on Netflix.
