The Duke of Cambridge has sent a message to the England squad following England’s 2-0 win against Sweden in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Within minutes of the match finishing, the Duke of Cambridge took to Kensington Palace’s official Twitter account to celebrate. The Duke said: “You wanted to make history @England and you are doing just that. This has been an incredible #WorldCup run and we’ve enjoyed every minute. You deserve this moment – Football’s Coming Home! W.”
Harry Maguire and Dele Alli both scored during the game securing England’s place in the final four of the World Cup. Their goals saved England from what would have been another nerve-wracking 30 minutes of extra-time and possibly another penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was the star of the show after doing three incredible saves to ensure England got their well-deserved clean sheet.
Prince William is president of the Football Association but the UK government banned him from going to Russia after the Salisbury attack.
The Duke of Cambridge also tweeted after England’s win against Colombia. The team broke the curse of losing penalty shootouts by winning 4-3.
The Duke of Cambridge tweeted: “I couldn’t be prouder of England – a victory in a penalty shootout! You have well and truly earned your place in the final eight of the #WorldCup and you should know the whole country is right behind you for Saturday! Come on England! W.”
Before the England team left for Russia, the Duke of Cambridge spent time with the squad and wished them well.
England now face either Croatia or Russia in the Semi-Finals on Wednesday. Croatia and Russia play tonight at 7pm on ITV1.
