The Prince and Princess of Wales surprised people along the Long Walk at Windsor Castle Sunday afternoon, joining a Coronation Big Lunch event just outside their home.
The royal couple had spent Sunday morning rehearsing for the evening’s Coronation Concert, where William gave a speech telling his father, “We’re all so proud of you” and pledging his life in service of “King, Country and Commonwealth.”
One guest told People magazine, “It was a lovely family atmosphere. William and Kate were really relaxed straight from the get-go. They were posting for selfies and talking to kids wearing crowns.”
The royal couple met with guests and partook in food and drink. William and Catherine were offered a gin drink from one guest’s picnic basket, and William later enjoyed a ‘Return of the King’ beer.
Catherine found time to speak with youngsters at the Big Lunch, comforting one little girl who’d burst into tears at the sight of the royal with a hug and telling another boy named James that her brother shares his name.
William was overheard telling one little girl where Princess Charlotte was.
“She’s very tired after yesterday. She’s having a quiet day at home. It was making sure her little brother behaved herself,” he told her, referencing his youngest son, Prince Louis’s, antics in the carriage procession and on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
Speaking to a chorister, William also revealed that Prince George is a big fan of classic rock bands Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. Princess Charlotte, he revealed, is a big fan of the Matilda musical and knows all the words to the songs.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte later accompanied their parents to the Coronation Concert in their backyard at Windsor Castle, while Prince Louis stayed home.
William and Catherine were just a few of the royals out and about Sunday afternoon for Coronation Big Lunches around the United Kingdom. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were in Surrey; Princess Anne in Swindon; and Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were in Buckinghamshire.
