Waiting for their mistress one last time: Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis watch her coffin pass

Two tiny corgis were among the mourners at Windsor Castle as the hearse bearing the late Queen Elizabeth II arrived at St. George’s Chapel on Monday afternoon.

Sandy and Muick, the last of Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis, were photographed waiting in the grounds of Windsor Castle, accompanied by members of the Royal Household.

Queen Elizabeth II’s love of corgis was well-documented throughout her life. She received her first, Dookie, in 1933; but her most famous canine companion was Susan, who she received as a gift on her 18th birthday in 1944.

From Susan, a line of corgis and dorgis—corgi/dachshund mix—was born and Queen Elizabeth II had her faithful companions up until the deaths of Holly and Willow, the last of the line, Willow having died in 2018.

In 2020, Queen Elizabeth II owned Vulcan and Candy; Vulcan died that year, and shortly before the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021, she was gifted two corgi pups named Fergus and Muick from her son the Duke of York. Fergus sadly passed away a month later from heart problems; but Sandy became her new corgi.

Those worrying about what will happen to Sandy and Muick need not worry: on a surprise walkabout Saturday, the Prince of Wales revealed that they are being well taken care of.

“I saw them the other day, that got me quite sad,” William told mourners in the queue. “They are going to be looked after fine.

“They are two very friendly corgis, so they’ve got a good home. They’ll be looked after very well. Spoiled rotten, I’m sure.”

It also emerged that Sandy and Muick will be taken care of by the Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson.

Sandy and Muick weren’t the only animals paying their respects to Queen Elizabeth II, the late queen’s beloved pony Emma was stood along the Long Walk with Terry Pendry, the late queen’s stud groom and manager.

The Service of Committal for the late Queen Elizabeth II took place at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Monday afternoon. She is to be buried alongside Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in the George VI Memorial Vault.
