The Queen carries out first engagements since hospitalisation

The Queen carried out her first engagement since her brief hospitalisation last week, conducting virtual audiences at Windsor Castle.

On Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth received two new ambassadors from her office at Windsor Castle, with the ambassadors appearing at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen received the credentials of His Excellency Gunn Kim, Ambassador of South Korea and His Excellency Markus Leitner, Ambassador of Switzerland, during the virtual audiences. Both men were joined by their wives.

These audiences marked The Queen’s first engagements in a week, following hospitalisation in London. On 20 October, Buckingham Palace announced that The Queen had pulled out of a planned two-day visit to Northern Ireland on doctor’s orders, advice that the 95-year-old monarch “reluctantly accepted.”

The statement read: “The Queen has reluctantly accepted medical advice to rest for the next few days.

“Her Majesty is in good spirits and is disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland, where she had been due to undertake a series of engagements today and tomorrow.

“The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland and looks forward to visiting in the future.”

It was revealed the next day that The Queen had actually spent the night in hospital for preliminary investigations and was discharged back to Windsor Castle to undertake light engagements for the foreseeable future.

After hosting her virtual audiences, The Queen announced that she had pulled out of attending the COP26 Summit in Glasgow next week. In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, it was announced that her health was at the forefront of the decision.

The statement read: “Following advice to rest, The Queen has been undertaking light duties at Windsor Castle.

“Her Majesty has regretfully decided that she will no longer travel to Glasgow to attend the Evening Reception of COP26 on Monday, 1 November.

“Her Majesty is disappointed not to attend the reception but will deliver an address to the assembled delegates via a recorded video message.”

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are all scheduled to attend COP26.
