Queen Camilla hands over prestigious literary prize

The Queen attended a prestigious literary event in London at the Roundhouse.

Before presenting the prize, she met with several celebrities and authors at the event.

The Booker Prize ceremony was held at the Roundhouse in London on 17 October, and it is the first time in three years that it has been held in person. This is the seventh time that Camilla has given out the prize.

Her Majesty has been a vocal and strong supporter of many literacy-related programs and organisations since she was The Duchess of Cornwall. In early 2021, she established her online book club, now known as @TheRoyalReadingRoom. She has used the club to promote reading as a social activity and a way to form connections and community.

On Monday evening, Camilla was seen chatting with English singer Dua Lipa at the event. Given that the singer gave the keynote address on her love of reading and how it has positively impacted her career, the two would have had much to discuss.

The Queen met with two authors nominated for the prize, Shehan Karunatilaka and Percival Everett. Karunatilaka’s novel, The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, was chosen as the winner.

Later on, she also met actress Natascha McElhone who will be playing Penny Knatchbull in the final series of The Crown on Netflix.

The Booker Prize was established in 1969 as the Booker Prize for Fiction. It was renamed to the Man Booker Prize in 2001 and then again as the Booker Prize in 2019. The prize is awarded for the best novel written in the English language that was published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. The winner is chosen by a five-person panel each year, and the prize is considered one of the most prestigious English language literary awards.
