Prince Charles dedicates new woodland in the heart of his Duchy of Cornwall

As the Jubilee year continues and spring planting season comes to an end, the Prince of Wales visited the Royal British Legion Centenary Woodland in Newquay to dedicate a woodland to the initiative commemorating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Duchy of Cornwall planted 100 trees specially chosen to handle Newquay’s climate, a city with significant rainfall. The woodland is a unique space where visitors can reflect and remember the service and sacrifice of the British Armed Forces for future generations. The Royal British Legion, or the British Legion, is a charity providing financial, social, and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces as well as their families.

The Duchy of Cornwall is a private estate established by Edward III in 1337 to provide an income for the heir to the throne. It currently runs and has run under the stewardship of The Prince of Wales, the current Duke of Cornwall, since 1969. In 2019, the Prince became the longest-serving Duke of Cornwall in history, marking his 50th year in charge. The Duchy is run in accordance with the Prince’s own social and environmental values. His Royal Highness has been known to be an avid supporter of the environment, having focused a fair amount of his work on the global challenges of the climate crisis, deforestation, and ocean pollution.

The trees planted are part of The Queen’s Green Canopy – a UK-wide tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and encourage those from across the nation to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.’ The goal is to establish 70 woods to honour The Queen and help fight the nature and climate crisis. The current official planting season ends in a few weeks at the end of March and will pick up again in October.
