Opinion: It’s time Thomas Markle let his daughter go

Thomas Markle was catapulted into the spotlight when his daughter, Meghan began dating Prince Harry and even more when it was announced that they would marry. We’ve since seen him stage photographs and fake surgery so he wouldn’t have to attend the wedding. And let’s not even mention the antics of his other daughter Samantha, who has confirmed that she is basically milking the press attention. If it wasn’t already abundantly clear, Meghan does not have a close relationship to her paternal family.

In the beginning, I think we all felt we shouldn’t blame Mr Markle as it appeared he didn’t ask for the press intrusion. Then it became clear that the photographs were staged and sympathy was lost. I can not understand why a man would fake having major surgery so he wouldn’t have to attend his daughter’s wedding. If he had been my father, I would have been very disappointed in him. In all of this, Meghan has been the epitome of grace, and one certainly wouldn’t be able to tell what is going on just by looking at her. Mr Markle then went on to comment that he had been cut off from the royal and could no longer contact her by telephone. He then accused Meghan of feeling “superior” and that he feared missing out on any possible grandchildren.

He told the Mail, “What’s sad is that sometime in the next year Meghan and Harry will have a baby and I’ll be a grandfather, and if we’re not speaking I won’t see my grandchild. How tragic is that, to deprive a child of its grandfather because I said a few things critical of the Royal Family?” He added: “I refuse to stay quiet. What riles me is Meghan’s sense of superiority. She’d be nothing without me.”

Well, if that doesn’t sound like fatherly love, I don’t know what is. First, he claims she feels superior and then claims she’d be nothing without him. Who is acting superior exactly? He does not seem to realise he’s done all of this all by himself. Buckingham Palace has continuously stated that it would not respond to Mr Markle’s comments. Meghan has been married to Prince Harry for three months and during this time she has been let down by her father numerous times. If the relationship wasn’t already broken before, it definitely is now. If Mr Markle really wants to save his relationship with his daughter, he needs to back off now, leave her alone and stop speaking to the press. Meghan doesn’t need that a father like that, nor that kind of negativity in her life.
