Charles III has released a rare message as King of Canada marking an important anniversary.
February 15 marked the 60th anniversary of Canada’s current flag, the red and white maple leaf. The King shared a message on celebrating the anniversary.
King Charles said ”Today my wife and I join with Canadians across Canada, and around the world, to commemorate an important milestone- the 60th anniversary of the Canadian flag. On February 15, 1965, the red and white maple leaf was first flown on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Since that time, it has become internationally recognised as a symbol of a proud, resilient, and compassionate country. For my own part, it is a symbol that never fails to elicit a sense of pride and admiration, as I recall with the deepest affect my many Canadian visits and friendships. Charles R.”
The King visited Canada many times as Prince of Wales, including his first official visit in 1970 to celebrate Manitoba’s centennial. He has also visited multiple times with Queen Camilla, with their last visit in 2022 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.
The King and Queen were intending to visit Canada in 2024 but that trip was postponed after His Majesty was diagnosed with cancer.
