Buckingham Palace has released the first official image of King Charles III.
The King is seen working in the famous Red Box, called The King’s Red Box, in Buckingham Palace’s Eighteenth Century Room last week. Victoria Jones from the Press Association took the photograph.
Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh are seen in a photograph in the background; the image was taken by Baron Studios and given by the then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip to King George VI for Christmas in 1951.
Each day the monarch goes through the Red Box with papers from government ministers from the United Kingdom and the Realm. Papers are also included from Commonwealth representatives and elsewhere across the globe. The Red Box is sent to the King from the Private Secretary’s Office. It is taken to wherever he is in residence at that time – whether it be at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or Balmoral.
The late Queen was known to go through her Red Box daily with an exception on Christmas Day.
The Royal Family has been in mourning since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who died on 8 September after over 70 years on the throne. Charles, as her eldest son, immediately succeeded her. The family’s official mourning period comes to an end on 26 September.
