Conflict past and present at heart of State Visit to Germany

King Charles and Queen Camilla will undertake their first official state visit since The King ascended to the throne, visiting France and Germany at the end of the month.

From 26 to 31 March, Their Majesties will embark on an official visit to celebrate shared histories, cultures and values, according to Buckingham Palace, and to strengthen the existing relationships.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will arrive in Berlin on 29 March ahead of two days of engagements in the capital city, Brandenburg and Hamburg.

The official itinerary has not been published; however, Buckingham Palace shared highlights of the German portion of Their Majesties’ State Visit.

King Charles will address the Bundestag, the German Federal Parliament, and the royal couple will meet President Steinmeier at the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of peace and unity in Berlin.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will attend a State Banquet at Schloss Bellevue, which was a residence of the Prussian Royal Family in the 1800s. It is currently the official residence of Germany’s President.

For Queen Camilla, the German State Visit will allow her to learn more about the Komische Oper in Berlin and how the company engages the local community through outreach projects. The Queen will be accompanied by German First Lady Frau Büdenbender.

King Charles will meet Ukrainian refugees and learn about the support they’ve received from the German community, and later, in Brandenburg, he will visit the troops of a joint UK-Germany military unit and watch an exercise involving bridge-building amphibious vehicles.

On 31 March, King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Hamburg and visit the St. Nikolai Memorial, a church destroyed by the Allies during the Second World War. The King will lay a wreath alongside President Steinmeier.

King Charles will also visit with green technology companies that have been behind the city’s transition to environmentally friendly. Their Majesties will also attend a reception where the invited guests are Hamburg residents and UK residents living in Germany to mark the end of their first State Visit.
