Clarence House staff line The Mall in honour of The Queen as their own future roles remain uncertain

Staff at Clarence House lined The Mall on Wednesday in honour of Queen Elizabeth II as Her late Majesty’s coffin was transferred from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall.

Staff bowed their heads as the procession marched past Clarence House, which is located only a few hundred feet away from Buckingham Palace.

Clarence House was the office of The King and Queen consort for two decades, however, with the death of Queen Elizabeth, Their Majesties are relocating administratively to Buckingham Palace.

With the change in business needs, staff at Clarence House are now facing job uncertainty, with the possibility of redundancies.

A royal spokesperson said some redundancies were “unavoidable” because of the change in role Charles and Camilla.

They said: “The Clarence House spokesman said: “Following last week’s accession, the operations of the household of the former Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have ceased and, as required by law, a consultation process has begun.

“Our staff have given long and loyal service and, while some redundancies will be unavoidable, we are working urgently to identify alternative roles for the greatest possible number of staff.”

The Guardian reports that private secretaries, the finance office, the communications team and household staff have been warned of redundancies, with Sir Clive Alderton informing personnel that the Clarence House office would be “closed down”.

The Public and Commercial Services Union says the decision to announce redundancies during the period of mourning is “nothing short of heartless”.
