King Charles III

Celebrations at Sandringham as The King wins his first ever jumps race

The King was toasting a Boxing Day success at Sandringham on Monday after his horse, Steal A March, won a handicap hurdle race at Wincanton.

The win was a significant one for His Majesty as it marks his first victory in a National Hunt race where the horses have to jump obstacles.

Queen Elizabeth II owned and bred many hundreds of racehorses, with King Charles inheriting them after her death in September.

Although Her late Majesty mainly focussed on her flat horses, she had a small selection of jumpers, including Steal A March.

The seven-year-old bay gelding previously won on June 4 2022 – right in the middle of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

He is trained by Nicky Henderson who was previously Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother’s principle racehorse trainer.

Mr Henderson was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian OrderĀ in 2010 by The Queen in recognition of his many decades of service to The Royal Family.

The King won Ā£13,007.50 in prize money following on from his Boxing Day success. He will keep approximately 80% of this, with 10& going to the trainer, and 10% to the jockey.
