King Charles makes surprising gesture to crowds at start of State Visit to France

King Charles surprised the thousands who had come to see him at the start of his State Visit to France with an unexpected move on the Champs Elysees.

As The King was driven along the famous Parisian street in an official car along with President Emmanuel Macron, the two men made an executive decision that got a good response.

As the car continued to move, they stood up and made use of the opening in the roof of the car to be able to wave to the crowds waiting for them.

The gesture was much appreciated as the cheers and clapping continued.

King Charles and President Macron were returning to the Elysees Palace after the first important event of the State Visit to France.

King Charles and Queen Camilla had been greeted at the Arc de Triomphe by Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, as the trip got under way. The President kissed The Queen’s hand while Mrs Macron welcomed Her Majesty with kisses on both cheeks.

The King and The President then made their way to the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior where both bowed their heads in respect during a short ceremony.

His Majesty also symbolically lit the Eternal Flame at the Tomb.

Big crowds turned out to see King Charles and Queen Camilla on their first State Visit to France. And as they made their way along the Champs Elysees, they were rewarded with a closer sight of The King as he joined President Macron in standing to greet them.

They also enjoyed a flypast.

The afternoon of day one saw the two men hold private, bilateral talks at the Elysees Palace.

The first day will conclude with a State Banquet at Versailles.
