Back to business after the Jubilee with a string of Investitures

Windsor Castle

It was back to work for Prince William after the event-filled Platinum Jubilee weekend. The Duke of Cambridge was at Buckingham Palace for an investiture ceremony on behalf of The Queen.

Sir Patrick Vallance, the United Kingdom’s chief scientific adviser, received an upgraded knighthood from the Duke of Cambridge. Previously made a knight in 2019, Vallance was named a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. This honour recognises the work of senior military officials and civil servants. Vallance joked with Prince William, that the award is “second time lucky.”

Nurse Marie Marshall received her MBE from Prince William and took to Twitter to tweet how proud she was of honour and included a photo of herself with the medal. Fire and Rescue Service member Sally Hammond, was awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal. Hammond tweeted photos of herself in uniform with the award saying: “Honoured and privileged to have received the Queen’s Fire Service Medal from the Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace today. Thank you to all who have supported me along the way.”

On the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Twitter account, a tweet went out: “Congratulations to everyone awarded honours today, it’s been great meeting you all!” They also included photos of the event.

The Prince of Wales has also presented honours to many in the past days at Windsor Castle. He awarded Sir David Attenborough with the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George for his work for conservation and the environment. The honour also acknowledged Sir David’s long and illustrious broadcasting career.

Eve Muirhead, who captained Team GB’s curlers to a famous gold medal win at the Winter Olympics in early 2022, picked up an MBE and an OBE at her investiture, later taking to Twitter to say ”getting honours for my achievements and services to Curling means so much to me. Thank you.”

Paralympic star, Jaco Van Gass, was presented with an MBE at the investiture, saying ”it was an honour to receive my MBE today and to be able to share it with such inspiring people.”
