If Anna Wintour had her way, the Met Gala would be a little bit more regal in the future.
Speaking to Today, the NBC morning show, the Vogue editor and Met Gala chair, revealed that she has a royal wish list for the Met Gala.
“I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together. That would be my dream couple.”
But, she said, Harry and William need not accompany them. “They could leave their husbands at home. It’s the two of them I want.”
Wintour has previously spoken about Meghan’s choice of wedding dress – designed by Claire Waight Keller of Givenchy – saying that, “I think her choice was brilliant, it was sophisticated, it was chic, it was grown-up.”
Of Kate’s style, in 2011, Wintour spoke to the New York Times and said that “There’s nothing trashy or vulgar about her. She dresses her age and never looks out of place.”
Kate and Wintour attended the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange event at Buckingham Palace last year.
The royals aren’t a rarity on the Met Gala carpet. Diana, Princess of Wales, attended in 1996, wearing Versace, while Princess Beatrice attended last year in Alberta Ferretti.
Other royals who have attended in the past include Queen Rania of Jordan, Princess Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis, Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece, Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, Charlotte Casiraghi, and Andrea Casiraghi and Tatiana Santo Domingo.
The 2019 Met Gala will be held on Monday, and the theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The theme traces the influence of camp on fashion from the era of the sun kings to drag queens, according to Wintour at a press conference in February.
The Met Gala has been held annually since 1948 to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute. It is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is chaired by Wintour. Wintour selects various celebrities to act as her co-chairs, and this year they are Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles and Serena Williams
