Arise Sir Brian May, Sir Grayson Perry and Dame Denise Lewis – The King’s first New Year Honours list is revealed

The very first honours list of King Charles III’s reign has been released, with figures from the world of music, television and sport leading the nominations.

Musician and astrophysicist Dr Brian May, who is best known as being the guitarist in the band Queen, has been knighted for services to music and to charity.

Sir Brian is a well known face at Buckingham Palace, having performed the national anthem on the roof of the building in 2002 for Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee, and again outside the palace for the Platinum Jubilee concert.

Also being knighted is contemporary artist, writer and broadcaster Grayson Perry for services to the arts.

Previously being awarded a CBE in 2013, Sir Grayson has been elevated to become a knight of the realm.

Likewise, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has been knighted for services to the Jewish Community, to interfaith relations and to education.

The Chief Rabbi is a good friend of The King, with the pair having regular meetings.

Meanwhile, sports presenter and former track and field athlete, Denise Lewis, becomes a Dame in recognition of her services to sports.

Also receiving a damehood is actress and wildlife campaigner Virginia McKenna for services to wildlife conservation and to wild animal welfare.

Fashion icon and designer Dame Mary Quant has been made a Companion of Honour in recognition of her service to fashion.

In the world of politics, Labour MP Chris Bryant and Conservative MP Dr Julian Lewis have both been knighted for political and public service.

Andrew Stephenson, Member of Parliament for Pendle, has been awarded a CBE for political and public service, with Helen Grant MP awarded an OBE.

Actor and broadcaster David Harewood has been awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting and charity, as has actor Stephen Graham.

Broadcaster and former footballer, Chris Kamara, has been awarded an MBE for services to football, to anti-racism and to charity.

Also in the world of football, former Northern Irish footballer Pat Jennings has been awarded a CBE.

Following on from their victory at the 2022 European Championships, members of the England women’s football team have been honoured.

This includes team captain, Leah Williamson, who receives an OBE.

England top international goal scorer, Ellen White, has been awarded an MBE, as has golden boot winner Beth Mead and lioness Lucy Bronze.
