Princess Martha wears family heirloom tiara for royal wedding

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway married American shaman Durek Verrett on Saturday, 31 August at the Hotel Union in Geiranger. The Princess chose to wear a personal tiara for the ceremony, wearing a diadem presented to her by King Olav.

King Olav V of Norway gave his granddaughter, Princess Märtha Louise, this tiara as an 18th birthday gift in 1989.

The tiara was created by Garrard & Co, the favoured British jeweller. It is unknown when the tiara was first made but the Duchess of Kent wore it to a banquet in 1982.

The diamond and pearl tiara has a short profile. It has a modern wheat-ear design of diamonds and pearls, with six pearls above.

While it is often described as a petite tiara, it is one of Märtha Louise’s most worn pieces. She has chosen it for several different state and private occasions including: Crown Prince Haakon’s 18th birthday in 1991, King Harald’s accession in 1991, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark’s 2004 wedding to Mary Donaldson, Prince Joachim of Denmark’s 2008 wedding to Marie Cavallier, and Prince Carl Philip of Sweden’s 2015 wedding to Sofia Hellqvist.

As Märtha Louise wore Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara for her first wedding in 2002, she has made a strong personal choice to turn to her own for her second wedding.
