Sweden’s Prince Oscar turns six

Sweden’s Prince Oscar, Duke of Skåne, is celebrating his sixth birthday today.

The young royal will celebrate the birthday privately with his family at Haga Palace.

The Royal Court of Sweden has released one new photo to mark his sixth birthday. They were taken by his mother, Crown Princess Victoria ahead of his birthday.

This is Prince Oscar’s last year before he has to start compulsory schooling in Sweden at age seven. It is expected he will join his older sister, Princess Estelle, at the Campus Manilla School in the autumn of 2023.

Oscar is the third of four of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s grandchildren to have birthdays within a few weeks of each other. Princess Leonore, his cousin, marked her eighth birthday on 22 February; Princess Estelle turned ten on 23 February. His cousin, Princess Adrienne, will celebrate her fourth birthday on 9 March.

Prince Oscar Carl Olof was born in Karolinska University Hospital on 2 March 2016 – just a month before his maternal first cousin, Prince Alexander (b. 19 April 2016). He is the second child and only son of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden. As such, he is third in the line of succession to the Swedish throne behind his mother and older sister, Princess Estelle, 10.

As the son of Sweden’s Crown Princess, Oscar has several royal godparents. He counts Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Princess Madeleine (his maternal aunt) and Oscar Magnuson (his maternal cousin) as godparents. His paternal cousin, Hans Åström, is also a godparent. He was christened in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace on  27 May 2016 in the Royal Family’s antique christening gown.

Prince Oscar, like his older sister, holds the style of Royal Highness and membership in the Royal House. Therefore, he will be expected to undertake engagements on behalf of the monarch once he becomes of age. His maternal royal cousins do not have that expectation as the King removed their Royal Highness style and place in the Royal House in 2019.
