The first plans have been announced for the celebrations of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden’s Golden Jubilee set to take place in 2023.
The Royal Court has invited people to create an emblem for the jubilee to enter into a competition to be used for the entire jubilee year for celebrations throughout Sweden. The project is aimed at students who are in graphic design.
The competition opened on 22 March and runs through 25 April.
Prince Carl Philip, the King’s only son and second child, is on the jury to select the winning emblem. The top ten logos will be selected in early May; the winner will be announced before midsummer, which is traditionally marked in Sweden in June around the summer solstice.
The winner will be invited to a jubilee event in 2023.
All information on the design competition can be found here.
The Golden Jubilee also coincides with the 500th anniversary of Gustav Vasa’s election as monarch. He helped to establish Swedish sovereignty in the breakaway from Denmark.
King Carl XVI Gustaf ascended the throne on 15 September 1973 upon the death of his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf. The 27-year-old King chose “For Sweden – With the times” as his motto. Carl Gustaf had been the heir to the throne since 1950.
More details on the Golden Jubilee will be announced in due course.
