A heavy focus on clean nuclear energy takes the spotlight on day 2 of Spain’s official visit to Croatia

King Felipe and Queen Letizia had a busy second and final day of their official visit to Croatia, aimed at celebrating the 30th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties with the signature of a memorandum of understanding for the creation of a particle accelerator near Grenada.

Their Majesties began their day by attending the Croatia-Spain Forum at Croatia’s State Archives; its primary objective is the promotion of the IFMIF-DONeS project (Internal Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – Demo Oriented Neutron Source), which will consist of the “construction of a source of neutrons to identify, test and certifies materials capable of withstanding the extreme conditions to which the components of the first wall of the future DEMO fusion reactor will be made,” according to the Royal Household’s website.

Within the context of this forum, King Felipe and Queen Letizia watched as the Minister of Culture and Science of both countries signed the Memorandum of Understanding that will lead to the construction of this experimental facility in Escúzar, near Grenada.

It was then time for the King and Queen to move to the residence of the Spanish Ambassador to Zagreb to meet parts of the Spanish community residing in Croatia; their numbers, according to the latest data collected in November, add up to 292 people, including 201 adults and 91 minors.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia then went on their separate ways; the monarch undertook the institutional portion of his visit by holding a meeting with the President of the Parliament, Gordon Jandroković, and, after a short walk to the other side of St Mark Square, with the Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic.

In the meantime, Queen Letizia and First Lady Sanja Musić visited SUVAG, a healthcare facility dedicated to rehabilitating people with hearing or speech difficulties drawing upon the techniques elaborated by academic Petar Guberina to help in the recovery process for people with such disabilities.

The visit then drew to its close, with the King and Queen departing Zagreb’s Franjo Tuđman Airport to make their way back to Madrid.
