Princess Amalia to attend her first Opening of Parliament

Princess Amalia, also known as the Princess of Orange as the heir to the Dutch throne, turned 18 years old in December. Today, she will attend her first Prinsjesdag, or Opening of Parliament.

Prinsjesdag always takes place on the third Tuesday in September. King Willem-Alexander will address a joint session of the States-General of the Netherlands, which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives, and give a Speech from the Throne. This speech will set out the policies for the coming parliamentary session.

Princess Amalia will join her parents in the Glass Coach, but she will not have a specific role today. Her main job will be to “be there” and to learn.

As the traditional Knights’ Hall is unavailable, the Speech from the Throne will be held in the Royal Theatre, which holds a special place in Princess Amalia’s heart. Just a few years ago, she performed her first musical there, and she was also involved in the production.

For the first time since the start of the health crisis, the public will be allowed to line the route of the King’s carriage ride.

Princess Amalia performed her first official duty as Princess of Orange the day after her 18th birthday when she was invited to take her seat in the Council of State. She recently started her first year of university and is not expected to take up many official duties as of yet. However, if at all possible, she will be attending Prinsjesdag from now on.

Prinsjesdag will begin at 1 p.m. local time with the carriage tour.
