90 Years of Grace: Her ’60s Style

Today we’re looking back at some of Princess Grace’s most stylish moments of the 1960s. This decade saw her and Prince Rainer welcome their third child, Princess Stéphanie, in 1965; attend the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960; pay two state visits to Ireland, in 1961 and 1965; and celebrate both the centenary of Monaco and Grace’s 40th birthday towards the end of the decade.

Princess Grace followed the fashion trends of the decade: shift dresses, French couture, pillbox hats, silk scarves; and during balls, she wore elaborate costumes and hair pieces for maximum effect. Read on to see a few of Princess Grace’s most iconic style moments of the ’60s.

In June 1961, Princess Grace took part in a state visit to Ireland. She and an entourage climbed a hill to visit the Shrine of Our Lady at Croagh Patrick in County Mayo.

Princess Grace and Prince Rainier also visited the United States in May 1961, and paid a visit to the White House to meet with President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

On 3 December 1963, during a visit to the United States, Princess Grace was filmed laying flowers at the grave site of US President John F. Kennedy, who she’d known during her time as an actress.

On 13 March 1965, Princess Grace presented her newborn daughter, Princess Stéphanie, to the world following her baptism. Stéphanie was born 1 February.

Princess Grace and Prince Rainier traveled to Dublin, Ireland for a state visit in early July 1965. Here she is in a British Pathé newsreel at the Bal des Petits Lits Blancs in County Wicklow. Grace is wearing a pink Givenchy evening gown.

In 1966, Monaco celebrated its centenary with a glittering ball. Princess Grace wore a stunning 19th century peach ball gown to celebrate.

Prince Rainier and Princess Grace attended Royal Ascot in 1966 as well, arriving in a carriage with Princess Marina of Kent.

In 1967, Princess Grace attended a mask ball in Italy at the Rezzonico Palace in Venice.

The Grimaldis visited Canada in the summer of 1967, during the country’s centenary celebrations, where they attended Expo 67 in Montreal, among other places. Here, Princess Grace is pictured during their visit in Ottawa with the Diplomatic Corps and the Ambassador of the Netherlands.

On 1 November 1967, Princess Grace traveled to Paris to open the Baby Dior Shop.

In 1968, Princess Grace visited Cerro Veronese in Italy in an all-pink ensemble with a wide-brimmed hat.

In 1969, Princess Grace attended the Ball for the Opening of the Americas Room alongside Italian actress Sophia Loren. The ball was held at the Monte-Carlo Casino, where the Americas Rooms were located.
