King Felipe and Queen Letizia return to work following a difficult start to the week

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain returned straight back to work upon returning to the country from Athens, where they attended the funeral of King Felipe’s uncle – King Constantine II.

His Majesty traveled to the western city of Salamanca where he opened the city hospital’s new building. He was accompanied by the Minister of Health and the Mayor of Salamanca among other guests.

During his visit, the King took part in a meeting about projects past and future of the Salamanca University Hospital. He subsequently toured the facility, which can count on 863 hospital beds, divided between 507 rooms.

His Majesty visited several departments of the structure, including Cardiology and Pediatrics, as well as the teaching room and the laboratories used to make in-hospital analyses.

Before returning to Madrid, the King held an informal meeting with members of staff at the hospital, during which they discussed the benefits that this expansion will have, both for the healthcare workers connected to the hospital and for the patients that utilise the facility.

Meanwhile, Queen Letizia undertook an engagement of her own, as she attended a meeting with the Directors Board of the Spanish Federation for Rare Diseases.

During the meeting, members of the staff presented the Federation’s new structures, which will now be focussing its work around five main objectives: effective functioning and strategy; strengthening and cohesion; social transformation; direct care; sustainability.

At the end of the meeting, Her Majesty was given a tour of the facilities and held a meeting with technical and working members of the association which she has been working with for the past 14 years.
