King Felipe and Queen Letizia present major education prize

King Felipe and Queen Letizia paid a visit to a rural school in Tui on Thursday, recognising its efforts for educational transformation after it had received an honour from their daughter’s Princess of Girona Foundation Awards.

The Spanish royals visited the Mestra Clara Torres Rural School after the institution received this year’s Princess of Girona Foundation Award for School of the Year for “being an example of dynamization in rural environments with six classrooms divided into different parishes of the municipality and which stands out for its commitment with the pedagogical integration of the value of solidarity and its capacity for educational transformation,” said the Spanish Royal Household.

During their visit, King Felipe and Queen Letizia were accompanied by the Minister of Education and Vocational Training; the President of the Xunta de Galicia; the President of the Galician Parliament; a government delegate from Galicia; the mayor of Tui; the Minister of Education, Universities and Professional Training of the Xunta de Galicia; the president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council; the president of the Princesa de Girona Foundation; and the Chair of the Princess de Girona Foundation’s Educational Transformation Work Group and one of its patrons.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited a number of workshops at the school, including lessons on gardening and cooking, radio broadcasting, sign language and reading, and illustration.

The royals also visited the Rural Center Agrupado Mestra Clara Torres Escuela de Pexegueiro, visiting the garden and yoga workshop, as well as a lesson on robotics before heading inside for a presentation by the Princess of Girona Foundation about its ‘Teacher Generation’ programme and ‘Education Beyond the Classrooms.’

Following these presentations, King Felipe and Queen Letizia officially honoured the school with its School of the Year Award.

In a short speech, King Felipe said: “The achievements that our Award distinguishes refer of course to academic success, but not only to that; also to the management of diversity, to the commitment to innovation, the quality of teaching, the culture and the values with which this center is committed. All of this necessarily shared by teachers, students and families. Each one of you is being recognized with the award you have just received.”
