New details of King Constantine’s funeral announced

The former King of Greece, Constantine II, will be laid to rest at his family’s burial ground following a ceremony at the historic Metropolitan Cathedral in Athens.

The service will take place on Monday, January 16th 2023.

Earlier, the Greek government announced that the former monarch won’t be given a State Funeral. Instead, a release said that Constantine would be buried as a private citizen.

Following the funeral, King Constantine will be laid to rest at Tatoi, the royal burial ground just outside Athens.

The Holy Synod of the Church if Greece also released a statement, saying ”Today, His Beatitude and His Eminence the Synodals expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased former King Constantine II, who invited them to the celebration of the Exodus Service in accordance with the provisions of ecclesiastical order and etiquette.”

Constantine II died on January 10th 2023 at the Hygeia Hospital in Athens. He was 82 years old. He took the throne of Greece in 1964 but went into exile following a military coup in 1967. The Greek monarchy was abolished following a referendum in 1973. Constantine lived in exile for several decades before returning to Greece in the last years of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Queen Anne-Marie, and their five children and nine grandchildren. His eldest son, Pavlos, is now head of the Greek royal family.
