Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is to undergo major back surgery in the coming weeks.
The Danish Royal Household announced that Queen Margrethe, who is 82, will have the operation at the end of February. The procedure will involve a long period of rehabilitation.
The surgery will take place at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on February 22nd 2023.
In a statement, the court revealed that ”For a long period of time, Her Majesty has suffered from back problems, and recently the situation has worsened. After consultation with Rigshospitalet’s experts, The Queen has decided to undergo major back surgery.”
After the operation, Queen Margrethe will be remain at the hospital for treatment and recovery. She is expected to take several weeks off to recuperate.
The statement continued ”This means that in the near future a number of official programme items will be postponed, cancelled or taken care of by other members of the royal family.”
Queen Margrethe has sometimes been seen sitting down during official receptions owing to her back issues.
The distribution of engagements among other members of the Danish Royal Family hasn’t been made clear yet. The official diary only has two events in for March 2023. Several of Queen Margrethe’s family can act as regent when needed, among them her two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mary, and her sister, Princess Benedikte.
