Danish Crown Prince and Princess visit Vietnam to beef up bilateral relations

The Danish Crown Prince and Princess have landed in Vietnam for a visit focused on building strong economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations. The couple are accompanied by Danish politicians and a large business delegation.

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are initiating a large-scale business promotion in Vietnam, and in the coming days they will focus on Danish interests such as green energy in Hanoi and Ho Chi Ming City. The visit also serves as a celebration, because 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of Denmark and Vietnam beginning their diplomatic relations.

Denmark established an embassy in Hanoi and Vietnam has had an embassy in Copenhagen. Approximately 8.500 Vietnamese people live in Denmark, with many arriving as refugees during the Vietnam War.

On October 31st 2022, Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik started their journey by visiting a very special place in Hanoi. The royals visited the childhood home of Prince Henrik, the late husband of Queen Margrethe. Prince Henrik spent his early years in French Indochina, now Vietnam, where his father had inherited some industrial enterprises.

It is expected that the second day of their visit, November 1st 2022, will be quiet as elections are being held in Denmark on that day. The Danish royal family has a tradition of not making any announcements on election day in order not to draw attention away from the election.

The last time Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were in Vietnam was in 2011. Then they carried out a diplomatic visit, before taking their children on a longer holiday in the country, where they cycled along the coast, among other things.
