Clarence House has just announced a busy programme of overseas visits for the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Charles and Camilla will tour Cyprus and Jordan in March while the heir to the throne will also visit Bosnia and Herzegovina next month.
The Prince of Wales will spend time in Srebenica where he will attend events marking the 25th anniversary of the massacre of Bosniak men and boys in the area during the Bosnian War. In July 1995, over 8,000 people were killed in Srebrenica, the worst genocide in Europe since World War Two. Prince Charles will pay his respects to the victims and meet survivors, including mothers still looking for their missing families.
The prince’s visit to Bosnia will also see him spend time in Sarajevo where he will meet political and religious leaders. He will also get an overview of work to help survivors of wartime sexual violence. During his time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prince Charles will also meet UK military involved in securing safety in the region. His diary for the trip, which will last until March 18th, is diverse as it also incorporates visits linked to the arts as well as meetings with entrepreneurs working towards improving the economy of the area.
The Prince of Wales will fly to Cyprus on March 18th where he will be joined by the Duchess of Cornwall for a four day stay which will be centred on Nicosia. The couple, making the first royal visit to the country since the Queen’s tour in 1993, will celebrate the environment, culture and heritage but will have a very serious tone, too. Charles and Camilla are expected to see ongoing peacekeeping work during a visit to the UN Buffer Zone which separates the Greek and Turkish controlled areas of the island.
On March 21st 2020, the prince and the duchess will head to Jordan for the last part of this overseas tour. The couple will be accompanied on many of their engagements by members of the Jordanian Royal Family. The visit, which is set to last five days, is designed to underline the close ties between the UK and Jordan and it will focus mainly on Amman. Highlights of the itinerary include a visit to the country’s first capital, the City of Salt, where Charles and Camilla will meet the Jordanian winner of the Global Prince’s Trust International Award 2019.
Their time in Jordan will also see the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visit organisations supporting refugees arriving in the country – it’s estimated that Jordan currently hosts over a million men, women and children fleeing conflict zones.
It will be the first time the couple have been to Jordan together – Charles was last there in 2015 while Camilla’s previous royal visit there was in 2013.
