Handing over the handset to Harry, little did a 15-year-old William know this was the last time he would hear his mother’s voice. Nor did his younger brother realise he would never have another chance to cut the phone call short.
The two princes have recalled with regret the last phone conversation with their late mother, Diana, the Princess of Wales, only hours before she died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
Speaking in a special ITV documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, they described how they were in a desperate rush to end the conversation and get on with their day, something which still weighs heavily on their minds.
Prince William said, ‘’The very last memory I have is a phone call from Balmoral. At the time Harry and I were running around, minding our own business, playing with our cousins and having a very good time.
”Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say “goodbye, see you later, can I go off?”
”If I’d known what was going to happen I wouldn’t have been quite so blasé about it.
That phone call sticks in my mind quite heavily.”
Prince Harry added that his spoke to Diana after his brother, and that, although he remembers little about the subject of the conversation, he still regrets it didn’t last longer.
Harry, who was 12 at the time, said, ‘‘If I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother, the things I would have said to her.
‘’Looking back at it now – it’s incredibly hard. I have to deal with that for the rest of my life: not knowing that it was the last time I’d speak to my mum, how differently that conversation would have panned out if I’d had even the slightest inkling that her life was going to be taken that night.’’
The revelations came as the royals said they would never speak about their mother as openly as they did in the documentary, which they said was a celebration of a human side little seen in public.
Harry also recalled how he cried for the first time at her funeral, only one of two occasions in which he was brought to tears.

You do know that according to the Bible, the dead are not conscious of anything. They do not remain with us, the soul dies and the spirit returns unto God who gave it.
Just the same love and hurt every other kid has when they lose their precious Mum.
Oh my God how sad the pain William and Harry carry on their Mom’s death. I hope they will heal with their talk about Dearest Diana. Bless them.
