Warwickshire libraries looking for royal stories from residents

Queen Elizabeth II

Residents of Warwickshire with stories of their brushes with The Queen or royalty are being encouraged to share their memories and memorabilia with the Warwickshire Library Service ahead of the Platinum Jubilee this summer.

Locals can fill out forms with their stories and photographs to form the basis of displays and artefacts to celebrate Warwickshire’s royal connection.

“The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is a unique moment in our history, and we encourage the people of Warwickshire to be a part of this momentous occasion by sharing their royal stories, photographs and memorabilia with us,” said Councillor Andy Jenns from the local City Council in a statement.

Residents are being asked if they or their family members have received honours or their Duke of Edinburgh Award; if they’ve attended a Buckingham Palace Garden Party or met a member of the Royal Family; if they saw a royal in person on a visit to Warwickshire; watched royal weddings or The Queen’s coronation live on television; if they collect royal memorabilia, whether recent pieces or items dating back, like a cigarette box given to a family member who fought in the First World War by King George V and Queen Mary.

“The materials we receive will create a wonderful display of local history about The Queen and the Royal Family in our local libraries, and through the power of our communities continue to develop Warwickshire Libraries’ local historic collections,” said Councillor Jenns.

“Warwickshire Libraries are one of many services across the county this year celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and we encourage people of all ages to get involved by sharing their royal memories with local libraries as a way to mark this special moment in our history, for now, and future generations,” said Tim Cox, Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire.

The Queen has visited Warwickshire on numerous occasions in her 70-year reign, as have monarchs dating back to her predecessor Elizabeth I.
