William and Kate make first official visit to Caribbean for Platinum Jubilee

Kensington Palace has shared more details about the upcoming royal tour of Belize, Jamaica and The Bahamas that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will undertake this spring.

William and Kate will travel to the Caribbean countries from 19 to 26 March on behalf of The Queen to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

The royals will begin their tour in Belize, visiting historic Mayan sites, celebrating biodiversity, and taking part in cultural celebrations of the Garifuna community. Next, they’ll visit Jamaica to honour the Jamaican Defence Force and celebrate Jamaican musicians like the legendary Bob Marley. Their tour ends in The Bahamas, where they’ll meet with communities across the islands of the country and attend a junkanoo parade.

Kensington Palace notes that “Throughout their visit, The Duke and Duchess will take the opportunity to commemorate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. Their programme will also touch on a number of themes that are close to Their Royal Highnesses’ heart and a key focus of their work with The Royal Foundation, including The Earthshot Prize, mental health and the importance of early childhood to lifelong outcomes.”

And the response to the coronavirus pandemic by each nation will factor into their visits, with William and Kate eager to learn more about how each country was impacted by the pandemic and how their communities responded to it as well.

William and Kate will endeavour to meet with as many locals as possible throughout the tour, with Kensington Palace noting that “children, young people and families, frontline workers, service personnel, leaders from government, business and the charity sector as well as inspiring conservationists, and the early years workforce” will comprise this lot.

Their tour of Belize, Jamaica and The Bahamas will be William and Kate’s first joint overseas visit since the pandemic began in 2020. Their last joint visit was to Pakistan in 2019; but William and Kate have both carried out solo visits in recent weeks, with William visiting the United Arab Emirates and Kate visiting Denmark.
