Prince William makes a dramatic intervention in the European Super League row

The Duke of Cambridge has made a dramatic intervention in the row about European Super League football.

Despite officially being in a period of mourning, Prince William in his role as President of the Football Association, tweeted his concerns about the new proposed football league.

William said: “Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community – from the top level to the grassroots – and the values of competition and fairness at its core.

“I share the concerns of fans about the proposed Super League and the damage it risks causing to the game we love.”

The European Super League was announced on Sunday and will be a “new midweek competition” with teams continuing to “compete in their respective national leagues”.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs are among 12 of the teams who have agreed to participate in the league.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has described the plans as “disgraceful” and “self-serving” adding that it is a “spit in the face of football lovers.”

Football players who take part in the new league have been told that they will be banned from playing in the Euros and World Cup.

Prince William has been President of the FA, the governing body of English football, since May 2006.

In that time, he has become heavily involved in football’s governance and has been an advocate for anti-racism campaigns in the sport.
