‘Oh, what’s occurring?’ The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge have fun in the arcade on a visit to Barry Island

They beat his granny to the number one spot in the Christmas TV listings last year but there were no hard feelings as the Duke of Cambridge arrived in Gavin and Stacey’s home, Barry Island.

In case you don’t watch the TV show, Barry Island is a peninsula in South Wales. It’s filled with tourist attractions including cafes, beaches, and Barry Island Pleasure Park. And ever since Gavin and Stacey hit British TV screens in 2007 it’s become even more famous as the setting for the hugely popular comedy. On August 5th 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the island to show support for tourism following the lockdown.

While on the island, the Duke and Duchess visited Island Leisure Amusement Arcade where both participated in a variety of arcade games. In the TV programme, it’s where character, Nessa, works and while none of her catchphrases tripped off the royal lips, the couple seemed to love their time there. They also visited Marcos Cafe, another celebrated setting in the show, where they talked to the owners about the impacts of COVID-19 on their business as well as O’Shea’s Fish and Chip Cafe.

They also popped into Shire Hall Care Home. Just months ago, the Duke and Duchess played virtual bingo with the residents of this home but their calling skills weren’t that highly rated. Resident Joan Drew-Smith told them at the time that the game ”wasn’t as good as it should have been”. When Prince William introduced himself and reminded her of her comments, she underlined her disappointment in his bingo calling with some slightly good-humoured but more robust language!

There was also a chance to meet people visiting and working on Barry Island in what was the couple’s first walkabout since lockdown began to ease. Both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were wearing masks with Kate opting for a similiar floral patterned reusable as the one she had worn during a visit to Sheffield to launch her new initiative to support parents and children. She matched it with an Emilia Wickstead dress.

This visit to Barry Island follows the Duke and Duchess’s short holiday to the Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast. It was revealed that the couple took their three children, Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte,5, and Prince Louis, 2, to a six-bedroom house owned by the Duke’s father, Prince Charles.

The Isles of Scilly are known for their rich heathland and sandy beaches and they have been a vacation spot for the Royal Family in the past. William spent a holiday here with his parents and Prince Harry in 1989. While visiting the Scillies, tourists can enjoy going on island walks, swimming in the ocean, watching the unique wildlife and island hopping. Their stay is another way in which the couple have shown their support for the UK’s tourism industry in recent weeks.
